On June 1st EURid (the .eu-registry) has launched the .ею extension. This is the Cyrillic version of the .eu domain. Everyone who wishes to do so can register a name under this new extension. Names which contain Cyrillic characters can only be registered under this Cyrillic domain from now on and no longer under the regular .eu extension. For everyone who already had registered a name with Cyrillic characters under the .eu extension, EURid has activated the exact same name for free under the .ею extension for 3 years. After those 3 years, the owner of the name needs to renew the name if he wishes to keep it. Furthermore EURid will automatically deactivate the name with Cyrillic characters under the regular .eu domain after those 3 years.

It’s also remarkable that EURid has launched this new domain name as a ccTLD and not as a new gTLD. Like that they’re not obliged to follow the rules for the release of a new gTLD, for instance they didn’t need to organise a sunrise. We’ll also have to wait and see whether a Greek version of the .eu extension will be launched. And we’re also curious if the .ею extension will take off since within Europe only Bulgaria uses Cyrillic characters.
