new gTLD launches getting up to speed

The launches of new gTLD’s are slowly getting up to speed. For already 50 new domain name extensions the sunrise has started or will start soon. Most of these extensions are managed by the registry operator Donuts and are very generic English terms like .bike or .clothing. They try to appeal to as wide an audience as possible within the niche they represent and therefore also have no extra restrictions in place.

The most noteworthy outsiders are .みんな, which is Japanese for “everyone” and which is run by Google. And also the first Geographic TLD will go into sunrise soon: .ruhr will represent the German Ruhr region.

The very first sunrise actually already is over, but seems to have been missed by most people. This was for the Arabic TLD .شبكة which meens “internet” or “web”. The registry doesn’t give out actual numbers of registrations, but admits that it received only a very small amount of requests during the sunrise. Some of the domain names registered under this TLD are for example Arabic translations of famous brands like “Google” (جوجل.شبكة) or “Rolex” (رولكس.شبكة) but none of them already has an active website.
