Splendid first quarter for .ie

During the first quarter of 2009, the .ie registry (Ireland) saw the highest number of new registrations ever. During the first 3 years of this year 9.781 new .ie domain names were registered. That’s a rise of 28% compared to the last quarter of 2008. 80% of those names were registered by sole traders and limited companies. 98% of this growth was generated by resellers.

‘We’re very pleased with this rise of .ie registrations,’ says David Curtin, CEO of the .ie registry. ‘It’s very motivating to notice that people, despite the economic crisis, still see potential in online activities. We can’t be anything but glad with those results,’ concludes Curtin.

However there are a few conditions to register an .ie name. The domain name has to partially or completely resemble the official company name or trade mark from the owner of the domain name. If the owner doesn’t have an address in Ireland, then he has to prove his economic bands with the country for instance through an invoice to an Irish customer.
