On July 9th South Sudan became independent. Along with this independence also comes a new domain name extension and South Sudan is impatiently waiting for it.

During a referendum in January 2011, it was decided South Sudan would become an independent country. Next to an own anthem, an own currency and an own international dialing code, South Sudan will also get an own domain name extension. South Sudan has applied for .ss, however the question is whether this will be approved.

‘We’ve been told that in Europa .ss has an association with the Nazi’s and the second World War,’ says Stephen Lugga, a local official. ‘Some might want us to choose another extension. However we’ve filed an application and we’re waiting for a reply,’ Lugga adds.

We’ll keep you posted about this issue.
