Today, on June 6th 2011, Norid (.no-registry) will relaunch the .priv.no extension. This domain extension allows individuals to register a Norwegian domain name. Previously this was impossible since you need to meet very strict conditions to register a .no domain name.

However if you wish to register a .priv.no name you also need to meet the following conditions. You need to be:

  • a resident in Norway
  • registered at the National Register
  • at least 18 years old

If you want to apply for a .priv.no name you need to hold a PID (Personal ID Number). The registry offers the possibility to create a synonym for your PID. This way, you will be identified with this synonym when you apply for a domain name without having your national identity number published.

Applications will be accepted from June 6th until June 14th. On June 15th all applications will be checked. If two or more individuals applied for the same domain name a lottery will be held to decide who will become the owner of this name. As from June 16th 2011, all applications will be treated on a first come, first served basis.

Since the .priv.no extension was already released once in 1993, it’s possible you already have a registered .priv.no domain name. If so, you must update this .priv.no domain name.
