A few days ago, the 9 millionth .org domain names was registered. Obviously PIR (.org registry) is very pleased they’ve passed this milestone. The .org extension now is the third largest gTLD and the 4th largest extension overall. However it needs to share this 4th place with the .uk extension.
Regarding the gTLD’s, only the .com extension (over 93 million registrations) and the .net domain (approximately 12 million names) are larger than the .org extension. Overall .com remains the largest extension followed by the German domain, .de (over 14 million registered names). The .net domain covers the third place and the .org and .uk extension share the 4th place. They’ve both got little over 9 million registered domain names.
During the last 5 years, PIR noted a remarkable increase of .org domain names registrations. In 2005, only 3,9 million names were registered since the launch of this domain name in the late ’80. The last 5 year, the number of registrations rose spectacularly and in March 2011, the milestone of 9 million registrations was reached.
