Since the launch of the IDN extension, .РФ, on November 25th 2009, 800.000 domain names have been registered under this extension. This domaine, .РФ, is the IDN extension for .rf (Russian Federation). Obviously Russia is very pleased with this result.
The first registrations under this new extension started very slowly but now the domain seems to be doing a great job. The Russian registrar, nic.ru, is also very happy with the rising registrations since 26% of the already registered .РФ domain names happened via them.
However it’s very hard to register a .РФ domain name as a foreign company or a non Russian citizen. You can only register such name if you’re a Russian citizen or of you’re the owner of a trade mark valid in Russia.
