The South African registry is currently holding a survey to gauge the interest in registrations directly under .za. Depending on the results of this survey, they will further examine whether the introduction of .za can be interesting.
The question arises, among other things, because several South African registrars have shown their interest in this extension to the registry. They also clearly indicated that they would enable this if registrations directly under .za. were made possible by the registry. The registry now wants to check the general opinion about .za registrations.
Currently only third-level registrations are possible (.co.za, .ac.za, .gov.za, .org.za and .net.za). Should the South African registry decide to allow second level registrations, so registrations directly under .za, then they would follow the example of some other registries that have also allowed second level registrations in recent years, such as Nominet for .uk ( United Kingdom) and Kenic for .ke (Kenya).
