Google buys yt.be domain

Google recently bought the domain name yt.be. This domain will be used by Google as an URL shortener for YouTube, Google’s own video service.

Currently Google uses the domain youtu.be as an URL shortner for YouTube but now they became the owner of yt.be, a domain that was already registered since 2003.  Those URL shorterners are mainly important for people who visit YouTube via Twitter. Daily 3 million people visit YouTube via tweets and since a tweet may only contain 140 characters those URL-shortners are a nice and almost necessary extra. At the moment Google uses the URL shortener g.co to refer to themselves via Twitter.
