SIDN again postpones EPP

logosidnThe SIDN (registry for .nl domain names) has further postponed the introduction of an EPP-interface. This new interface would bring the SIDN in line with most other “modern” registries. Currently, the .nl-registration system still works via a rather out-dated e-mail interface.

The new interface was originally announced to be available during the second half of 2007. It has since then however been postponed or even fully removed from the planning a couple of times. Actual deployment seemed to come nearer, with a limited amount of .nl-registrars actually already testing the new interface. The testing environment was announced to be opened up for all registrar on the 4th of January 2010. Today, less then two weeks before that time, the SIDN however informed their registrars that they would not be able to have things ready by that time. The testing environment is now planned to open up on the 1st of Februari 2010. Because of this, the actual implementation of EPP in the live system has also been postponed with one month, from February 17’th to March 17’th.

The .nl-community is anxiously awaiting the outcome of this. The .nl-registry doesn’t have a very good track record when it comes down to planning or having an error-free system ready from the word GO. An implementation of DNSSec was also announced for the year 2009, but has been postponed until an unknown date in the future. The previous release of the SIDN-interface (known as DRS4) was release in September 2007 after having been postponed a couple of times and, at the time of release, still contained a number of bugs that required last-minute fixing.
